What You Need to Know

If you are an employer or an employee in India, you may have heard of EPF, ESIC and Labour Registration. These are three important schemes that provide social security and welfare benefits to workers and their families. In this blog article, we will explain what these schemes are, how they work and how to register for them.

EPF: Employee Provident Fund

EPF is a retirement savings scheme that is mandatory for all employees who earn up to Rs. 15,000 per month. Under this scheme, both the employer and the employee contribute 12% of the employee’s basic salary and dearness allowance to a provident fund account every month. The employee can withdraw the accumulated amount along with interest after retirement or in case of certain emergencies. The employee can also nominate a family member or a legal heir to receive the amount in case of death or disability.

ESIC: Employees State Insurance Corporation

ESIC is a health insurance scheme that covers employees who earn up to Rs. 21,000 per month and their dependents. Under this scheme, the employer contributes 3.25% and the employee contributes 0.75% of the employee’s wages to an insurance fund every month. The insured employees and their dependents can avail medical benefits such as free treatment, medicines, diagnostic tests, hospitalization, maternity benefits, disability benefits and funeral expenses from ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.

Labour Registration: Shops and Establishments Act

Labour Registration is a legal requirement for all shops and establishments that employ workers in India. It is also known as Shops and Establishments Act registration or Gumasta license. The purpose of this registration is to regulate the working conditions, wages, hours of work, holidays, leave, health and safety of workers in shops and establishments. The registration process varies from state to state, but generally involves filling an online application form, paying a fee and submitting the required documents.
